Make it a weekend in Charleston
Local, game-day tested — near Johnson Hagood Stadium.
Eat before
- Moe's Crosstown Tavern· 714 Rutledge Ave — 5-minute walk, edge of Hampton Park
This is THE Citadel game-day tavern — grab a burger and a cold draft here before you walk over, and you'll be shoulder-to-shoulder with cadets' families and 25 years' worth of 'Best Neighborhood Bar' regulars.
- Lillian's Petite Market & Eatery· 247 Congress St — 10-minute walk, Westside
Tucked into the old Harold's Cabin corner store, this is where in-the-know locals fuel up before kickoff — order the fried chicken sandwich that regulars swear is the best in town and grab a coffee for the walk.
After the game
- Leon's Oyster Shop· 698 King St — about 1 mile / short rideshare up King
Pile into this converted old body shop after the final whistle for chargrilled oysters, that shellacked fried chicken, and rosé on tap — it's loud, celebratory, and exactly where a post-game crowd wants to land.
- Recovery Room Tavern· 685 King St — about 1 mile up King, next to Leon's
South Carolina's reigning best dive bar and one of the country's top PBR sellers for a decade — order a tallboy and the Tater Tachos, feed the jukebox, and rehash the game till the tots stop (kitchen runs late).
Getting in
- Fishburne Street tailgate scene· Wraps three sides of the stadium and down Fishburne St
The tailgate spreads all around the stadium and a good way down Fishburne — pull in early to claim a spot, keep tents to 10x10, no trailers, and pack out your trash like the regulars do.
- Parking passes & rideshare· On-campus lots off Hagood Ave
Day-of cash parking is limited, so buy an advance lot pass through the Brigadier Foundation or ticket office — or just rideshare/CARTA in and skip the Hagood Avenue crawl entirely.
- Gates & bag policy· Johnson Hagood Stadium entrances
Gates open 90 minutes to two hours before kickoff — travel light, because the no-bag line moves fast while the clear-bag check backs up close to game time.
Don't miss
- Friday afternoon dress parade at Summerall Field· The Citadel parade ground, a few blocks from the stadium
If you're in town Friday, don't skip the cadet dress parade on Summerall Field — it's free, open to the public, and a genuinely moving Charleston bucket-list spectacle; arrive 15-30 minutes early and a cadet will point you to visitor parking.
- A stroll through Hampton Park· Directly across from the stadium
Charleston's largest peninsula park sits right at the stadium's doorstep — wander the rose garden and around the pond before kickoff for the prettiest, most local warm-up you'll find on game day.
