Make it a weekend in Lexington

Local, game-day tested — near Alumni Memorial Field at Foster Stadium.

Eat before

  • Niko's Grille· 167 S. Main St., downtown — walkable to stadium

Locals lean on this Greek-and-American joint (owner Stelio was born in Greece, raised in Lexington) for a fast, filling gyro or beef kabob before they head over — no fuss, just good grub.

After the game

  • The Palms Restaurant & Bar· 101 W. Nelson St., downtown — ~0.3 mi from stadium

Cadets and W&L kids have been closing out game days with a pitcher here since 1975 — it's THE post-game bar-and-grill in town, so grab a booth under the neon palms and settle in.

  • Heliotrope Brewery· 128 S. Main St., downtown

A women-owned brewpub pouring small-batch, hyper-local ales and lagers alongside wood-fired pizza — the relaxed spot to rehash the game once The Palms fills up.

  • Devils Backbone Outpost Taproom & Kitchen· Off Lee Hwy near I-81, ~15 min from downtown

Worth the short drive out toward the interstate for beer and Blue Ridge views at this big Virginia taproom — easy to catch on your way out of town.

Getting in

  • Free parking at Varner Lane & Lackey Farm lots· Across from the Lexington Visitors Center / Lackey Farm at 110 Hines Lane

Skip the $40 paid lots — there are 150+ free spaces on Varner Lane across from the Visitors Center and satellite parking at Lackey Farm, both a short walk to post, but they fill fast so come early.

  • Parade Ground tailgate (enter at Jordan's Point)· On post, adjacent to Foster Stadium

Tents are allowed only on the Parade Ground and the North Institute Hill lot — one per vehicle, and DON'T stake it (weights only; stakes damage the sprinkler system underneath). Enter the north side of post at Jordan's Point.

  • Gates & the dry-post rule· Foster Stadium, VMI post

Gates open one hour before kickoff, and heads up — VMI is a dry post, so no alcohol anywhere on campus, including at your tailgate, for anyone of any age.

Don't miss

  • Sweet Things Ice Cream Shoppe· 106 W. Washington St., downtown

Homemade ice cream in hand-rolled waffle cones since 1984, right across from W&L — bring cash (they don't take cards) and don't leave town without a scoop.
